biography
Curtis Macdonald is a saxophonist, composer, sound designer and producer based in New York City. He graduated cum laude from the New School University where he immediately became faculty. Curtis recently finished his debut record that will be released at the beginning of 2011.
Growing up in Canada, Curtis soaked up the local jazz scene starting when he was nine years old. Eager to further refine his craft, he ventured to the Banff Centre for the Arts where he met his then-mentor Kenny Werner who urged him to be among jazz’s best in New York City. Upon arrival, he apprenticed with Miguel Zenon, George Garzone, Chris Speed, Jane Ira Bloom, Donny McCaslin, Steve Lehman, Gerry Hemingway and Jim Black to name a few. He now can be seen leading his own band, The Curtis Macdonald Group throughout New York City’s most respected jazz and creative music venues.
Along with developing a sizable repertoire for jazz ensemble, Curtis’ music has taken form in many a medium. He is often commissioned to write and produce music for film, dance, games and theater. His production savvy is heard on many new music and modern jazz recordings where he incorporates improvisation, sound art and digital technology.
While Curtis’ music draws from a variety of influences, he remains most allured by the emotive sounds of saxophonists past; yet attracted to today’s most explosive voices, Curtis draws a new melodic virtuosity based not only on harmony, but also more abstract and philosophical models. Many have cited his sound as a myriad of forms respecting the likes of Lee Konitz, Paul Desmond and Steve Coleman.
“Music should put a spell on you – It’s an enchantment that guides you.” says Curtis Macdonald with a grin when reflecting on his music.
Curtis’ versatility incorporates listening with the ears of a sound designer, playing the saxophone to capture a sense of fluidity, and composing to tickle the mind, all without losing a sense of unity.
